Dear TMSA 6th and 8th Grade Parents and Guardians -
We are pleased to inform you that Fulton County Schools District Health Services will conduct scoliosis screenings at The Main Street Academy during the month of February for 6th and 8th grade students only. The exact date and time will be shared soon.
What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that affects 2–3% of the population—approximately 7 million people in the United States. While most cases are diagnosed between the ages of 10 and 15, scoliosis can also affect infants and adults. When left untreated, scoliosis can worsen over time, leading to chronic back pain, potential impacts on heart and lung function, and challenges with self-esteem. However, with early detection and proper treatment, individuals with scoliosis can lead healthy, active lives.
What to Expect During the Screening
The screening is non-invasive, takes about 30 seconds, and is performed by trained professionals. It’s a simple and effective way to detect potential signs of scoliosis early.
Opt-Out Information
If you do not wish for your child to participate, opt-out forms will be made available once the details are finalized. Please keep an eye out for this important information. If we do not receive the opt out forms once available, your scholar will be screened. We encourage all parents to participate in supporting their child’s health and well-being.
