Second Semester 8th Grade News

Greetings TMSA 8th Grade Parents and Guardians -

We would like to begin by thanking you (our amazing parents) and all our 8th grade students for your unfaltering support. We are looking forward to finishing the school year strong and celebrating our 8th Graders as they transition to High School. As we are ramping up for the Georgia Milestones Assessments, please visit the following URL for study resources from GA DOE: https://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Assessment/Pages/Milestones_Resources.aspx

Social Studies – Mr. Lotfy

We are currently finishing our unit Georgia in the American Civil War. We will continue to work vigorously to complete the remaining history standards before the students take the Milestone. I will be sending home a packet with the students during spring break that will include the materials we have already covered as well as the upcoming material. It will include practice questions and an answer key.

Math – Mr. Bailey

In both 8th grade math and Algebra 1, we have been reviewing the curriculum for milestones, with an emphasis on solving linear functions and geometry in 8th grade math, and an emphasis on solving Quadratic functions and Exponential functions.

A – Ms. Ward9

In English Language Arts, Grades 8th & 9th, we are focusing on GEORGIA MILESTONES ASSESSMENT (GMAS) REVIEW. Students are reviewing learned knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content in language arts. Our goal is to ensure that all students are set up to be successful in high school and beyond, and that will remain the focus for the remainder of this academic school year.  We are also taking the opportunity to see how well our technical capabilities meet the demands of computer-based assessments and to see what resources/skills our students may yet need. If you would like more information, please visit Georgia Department of Education web page at  English Language Arts Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) 6-8. If you have any questions concerning your child’s academic performance, please contact me at [email protected].

Writing Strategies

 7 Habits of Good Writers:

  • They read a lot!
  • They write every day.
  • They try out innovative ideas and strategies that they see in books they read.
  • They do not edit their writing until they are finished getting their thoughts down.
  • They get ideas from books, from others, and by noticing the world around them.
  • They identify their audience, purpose, organization, style, flow, and presentation before they write.
  • They complete the writing process in its entirety: prewrite/brainstorm, research (if needed), draft, revise, edit/proofread, and publish.

Science – Ms. Stepp

In Science Class, we are finishing the chemistry units including Matter Properties and Characteristics, Reading and Using the Periodic Table, Atomic Structure and Atomic Trends. Students of the High School Physical Science class are also moving into Solubility, Nuclear Chemistry and Gas Laws soon. Milestones reviews have been taking place this semester through Progress Learning (formerly USA Test Prep) and test question reviews. We will wrap up our year with many fun experiments that will reinforce their learning and continue to prepare the for high school.
