This month we are focusing on Habit 5.
Students and teachers are learning how to
Listen FIRST and then SPEAK.
With this habit, students have learned:
- It is better to listen first and talk second.
- You have 2 ears and one mouth- Listen twice as much as you speak.
- Listen to people sincerely
- When others are talking, we are listening at one of these 4 levels:
- Ignoring
- Pretending
- Selective listening
- Attentive listening
- Be an empathetic listener
Putting the Habit into practice:
- Introduce the habit with an object:
- Telephone: play the telephone game.
- Giant ears practice- pretend listening; see how frustrating it is for the other person and then do ‘real listening
- Read some of these books from the library:
- Are You My Mother? by'P.D. Eastman
- Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino
- Marrying Malcolm Murgatroyd by Mame Farrell
- Veronica Knows Best by Nancy Robinson
- The Bully of Baham Street by Leonard Shortall
