As we close out a marvelous first semester and Unit of the 7th-grade math curriculum, our TMSA 7th-grade scholars are participating in hands-on group activities to demonstrate their in-depth knowledge of expressions and inequalities. Not only are our scholars able to show their understanding of these concepts through computation, but they have also developed a relative vocabulary to help break down words problems and real-life scenarios based on the topics from Unit 2.
In 7th grade Life Science, students have been learning about cell organelles. To demonstrate their mastery, students completed a physical or conceptual model of a cell of their choosing. Some students crafted 3- Dimensional models while others wrote a children’s book or graphic novel incorporating the role of organelles within the cell. Students extended their knowledge of cells to the Trout in the Classroom Project currently taking place in our Science Lab. Not only are students learning about the life cycle of trout, but they also are gaining a deeper knowledge of the role that cells play in the trout life cycle; including, meiosis, mitosis, cell differentiation, and how multi-cellular organisms grow. Bonus connections with the Trout in the Classroom program include a basic understanding of biotic and abiotic factors in ecology, and why trout species should be conserved. Additionally, students are developing critical thinking skills by reflecting on the successes and challenges of raising living organisms according to their survival needs.
In Social Studies, we are closing the unit of Africa and are highlighting African government and economic developments. As we dive into South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya’s economic backgrounds we want to understand how life has changed from the past to the present day. We have incorporated movies such as “Invictus” into the lesson to grasp the true meaning of how Nelson Mandela changed South Africa. We also play numerous games to aid in learning about their cultural differences. In South Africa, we played “Monopoly”, in Nigeria we played “Rags or Riches”, and in Kenya we will play “Ruler of All”. Each game enhanced students' understanding and connections throughout the unit.
Currently, 7th graders are reading The Hunger Games novel in class and completing comprehension assignments based on the reading. We are also starting a new unit on informational essay writing. We are learning new grammar concepts such as prepositions, and subject-verb agreement.
