Introducing TMSA's School Social Worker, Mr. Nixon

Hello TMSA Parents and Community,

My name is Mr. Nixon, and I’m The Main Street Academy's new social worker for the 2021 - 2022 academic school year.  I’m super excited about working with our awesome scholars. Some of my responsibilities here at TMSA include but are not limited to the following:

  • Individual and Group Counseling
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Staff Development and Training
  • Home Visits
  • DFACS/Juvenile Court Liaisons
  • Referrals to community resources
  • Enforcing Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law
  • Morning Announcements
  • Community Resources for Parents, Students and the School.

This past September I focused on Rapport Building. Rapport is a harmonious relationship between people who have established mutual trust.  I was able to have a series of workshops with varies classes.   The workshops were entitled “Conversation and Donuts with the Social Worker” The series focused on the following

  • Uncertainty During a Pandemic
  • Peer Mediation
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Self-Esteem Building
  • Peer Pressure

Currently, during the month of October, I am focusing on Mindfulness.  Mindfulness is a Cognitive Based Therapy that focuses on reducing depression, anxiety and stress. Mindfulness allows your mind to think, react and progress your surroundings.  Being present in the moment.   Examples of Mindfulness can take many forms, but here are just a few:

  1. Be Present in the Moment
  2. Recognize your stressors
  3. Mediation/Deep Breathing
  4. Unplug and turn off all electronics for 1 hour per day.
  5. Exercise
  6. Celebrate your small milestones.
  7. Weekly Family/Friend Outings

I look forward to working with your scholars.  Together we will commit to student success one student at a time.

Thank You,

Mr. Keith Nixon
