Lower grades began art in January with a focus on positive and negative space. We drew waves of moving color, then “puzzle-cut” it by estimating zig zag line spacing on the back. Then we glued it down with negative, empty space between our cut shapes to create a dynamic piece of art!

In February we are spending the first segment of class exposing students to well known African American artists of the past, as well as contemporary artists such as the man who painted the presidential portrait of Barack Obama. So far they have seen videos of Kehinde Wiley and Romare Bearden.
We are also incorporating story telling and illustration by black authors, such as the book “Beautiful Blackbird” by Ashley Bryan. The Coretta Scott King Award winning book is an adaptation of a tale from the Ila speaking people of Zambia celebrating each person’s unique beauty within. This is only one illustration as students will compete this illustration project next week. [book read by author https://www.pbs.org/video/georgia-read-more-beautiful-blackbird/]

Upper grades are continuing their focus on using the Elements of Art and Principals of Design through photography. This was a 6th grade piece submitted for the assignment: “Creative Self Portrait and Poem.”
My hands are my strength:
Made for hugs
Made to write
Made to play
Made for hardworking projects
Made to open up doors to my future
My hands are my hands.
