ELA- Mrs. Joseph-Haynes and Ms. Hunt
Our first semester reading standards focused on reading Literary. The standards included ELAGSE5RL1: Quote accurately from a text explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text; ELAGSE5RL2: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges; ELAGSE5RL3: Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or dram, drawing on specific details in the text. We are utilizing our iReady books to guide grade level instruction on those standards.
Also, please feel free to check out books from our library to continue encouraging your child to read!
We are wrapping up our Narrative Writing unit, where students were asked to write a personal narrative. Some of the writing steps include:
- Brainstorming ideas.
- Using transition words
- Using dialogue
- Creating their first draft
- Revising and Editing their writing
- Providing a conclusion to their story that leaves the reader interested.
- Providing a “hook” to get the reader’s attention
- Using stories/ passages to connect the students to the topic

Math/Science- Mr. Dunston/Ms. Wimberley
Math:
During the first quarter of the semester our focus has been on Unit 1, which consist of Order of Operation, Place Value and Multiplication with 2-Digit Divisors. The standards that we covered were MGSE.5.OA1/OA2, MGSE.5.NBT.1/2/5. In these standards our focus was to familiarize the students with procedural and conceptual skills to captivate the ability necessary to solve equations step-by-step. We used Pearson Realize/Saavas Realize online and textbook Volume 1 and 2 to support independent work and homework practices.
Science:
During the first quarter of the semester our focus has been on Unit 1, which covers the Surface Feature understanding. This topic falls under the Contents of Earth and Space Science using standards 5E1AB. We used STEMscopes online and textbook (5th grade) to support understanding. Surface Feature covers topics of "Constructive and Destructive Processes" and how surface features are created as well as destroyed.
Sincerely,
TMSA 5th Grade Team
