TAG Famous Rock Structure Research Project

3rd Grade TAG Enrichment

Famous Rock Structures Research Project (Due 12/1/17)

Science Standards:

Earth and Space Science

S3E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the physical attributes of rocks and soils.

  1. Ask questions and analyze data to classify rocks by their physical attributes using simple tests.
  2. Make observations of the local environment to construct an explanation of how water and/or wind have made changes to soil and/or rocks over time.

TAG Standards:

Advanced Research Skills (ARS)

The student defends research findings in a presentation or exhibit.

Advanced Communication Skills

The student uses written, spoken, and technological media to convey new learning or challenge existing ideas.

Higher Order Critical Thinking Skills (HO/CTS)

The student conducts comparisons using criteria.

 

Task:

Students will research a famous rock structure (please see the assigned list) and create a presentation (poster board/PowerPoint/trifold board/video, etc.) to demonstrate their knowledge of rocks, & soils.

Students will use the following guiding questions:

  1. What is the name of your famous rock structure?
  2. Where is it located?
  3. What type of rock is it?
  4. How was it formed (tell me about its history)?
  5. How old is it?

Presentations must also include:

  1. Text Features
  2. At least 2 interesting facts about the rock structure
  3. A map of the continent, country, state (if applicable), and city with the specific location of the structure clearly identified (include a map key, etc).
  4. Pictures of your rock structure
  5. Information about the type of rock and explain how weathering & erosion may have affected your rock structure.

Good Afternoon Parents,

Today marked the end of another exciting week of teaching and learning at TMSA! We would like to thank all the parents who volunteered their time, and/or sent in supplies for the classroom.

Thank you to the parents who attended the 3rd grade puppet show today. The students worked hard and they did an awesome job writing, directing, and starring in their puppet shows!

An extra special thank you to the following parents for assisting with various aspects of the puppet show production: Mrs. Shaw (Aniyah’s mom), Ms. Taylor (Taliah’s grandma), Mrs. Taylor (Constance’s mom), Ms. Strickland (David’s mom), and Ms. Tutson (Rashad’s mom). We appreciate you! 😊

Native American Pow Wow Field Trip

We are asking all chaperones to arrive no later than 8:00am on Thursday (11/1). We will have a brief chaperone meeting at 8:05 to address logistics, such as assigned groups, wristbands, schedule, etc.

 

International Day

TMSA celebrated part 1 of International Day on Friday, October 27th, and part 2 will take place on Wednesday, November 1st. Below is a list of the assigned countries for 3rd grade. Please let us know if you have any expertise, or would like to donate items and/or assist your child’s homeroom to prepare for the Tour of Nations on 11/1/17.

Middlebrooks: Argentina

Kavanagh: Venezuela

Dolland: Ecuador

 

Georgia Tech Jacket 2 Jacket Reading Program

It’s that time of year again to participate in the annual Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball Jacket 2 Jacket Reading Program.
All of the winning students and classes will be recognized during halftime at the Georgia Tech vs. UT-Arlington on December 10th at McCamish Pavilion on GT’s campus.

 

FEATURED PRIZES:

Students participating in the program are eligible for several prizes, including a plaque, bookstore gift certificate, free admission to a Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball game and recognition at halftime of the Women’s Basketball game on December 10th, 2017. Every student who participates in the program will gain free admission to the Georgia Tech vs. UT-Arlington game on December 10th and every child in attendance at the game will receive a Georgia United goodie bag. In addition, the top classes with the most pages read will receive a visit from the Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball team in the Spring Semester. Prizes will be awarded for the following categories:

 

  • Highest School Total (Elementary and Middle School)
  • Highest Class Total from Each Grade
  • Highest Individual Total (Elementary and Middle School)
  • Highest Individual from Each Grade
  • All Participants (in seat recognition and Georgia United goodie bag)

 

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Our Parent/Teacher Conference Day has been rescheduled to Friday, November 3, 2017 from 8-10am, however, teachers are available to meet with you regarding your child’s progress prior to that date. We are available from 1:20 – 2:10pm on most school days, and on Tuesdays between 5:00-6:00pm. All conferences are by appointment only. Please email your child’s homeroom teacher if you need to schedule a conference.
