EXTRA CREDIT Opportunities

All of these opportunities are posted now on Google Classroom.  Students were given the opportunity to log on to Google Classroom this week to make sure they know their passwords, etc.  I do not have the ability to reset their passwords, so do not ask!

(Most students have logins:  Their passwords were originally Mainstreet and would only be changed if a student changed it.)

Anyhow…this information, with links, is posted on Google Classroom.

Have a great week!  Can’t wait to see your Wringer presentations on the 30th!

I hope that each student has a great week with family and friends! Here are a few extra credit opportunities to keep your brain working while you take a bit of time off.

Just a reminder: Make sure you are finished with the Wringer activities by 11/27, and you are ready to present your Wringer project on 11/30. The Wringer activities (conflict chart, characterization chart and journal assignments) are available for download here on your Google classroom.

These extra credit opportunities will not take the place of the Wringer activities and project! All of these activities must be completed by 11.26 to receive extra credit points.

1. Readworks questions for the article “Early People in Central American Land Bridge” Link/Login/Directions are posted here on your Google Classroom.

2. Newsela article “The Stag Beetle” and questions. The article is posted directly on Google Drive for you. Click the link.

3. USA Test Prep practice Benchmark test due 11.26 (posted on your usatestprep assignments already…some students have already completed this work!)

4. Benchmark Test retakes. Go to and take Benchmark 1 and Benchmark 2. If you score much better than your original test, you may earn some extra test grade points for demonstrating growth. You are not permitted to use notes or the book while taking the test. Demonstrate the core value of integrity! Your logins/passwords are available in the link underneath the assignment called “Benchmark Tests.”

Upcoming Events/Thanksgiving Break

This is going to be a long one, so get comfortable…

  1. Due 11/20: Don’t forget that students need to order their next novel for the month of December (Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen) by November 20 if you wish to get it for $4 from the website before we need to read it! If we order during break, the books will be here when we return!  And, while you are there, feel free to order the next couple books after that:  January’s Number the Stars by Lois Lowry for $7.oo and February’s Holes by Louis Sachar for $4.00.  Not only that, but if you wish to place any additional orders for books for all ages of kids for gifts for the holidays, you can have it delivered for free to school and it will be here well before the holidays.  I can keep a secret box just for you!  Our class code is QWNDZ-don’t forget that our class earns free books when you order using my class code.  Here is the site: Class Code:  QWNDZ
  2. Students should be working on their Wringer assignments this week so there is less to do over the actual break, but the following items will be checked after break:

3.  Due by 11.26: Students have the opportunity to retake the first two Benchmark Tests ONLINE from NOW until November 26 at for possible extra points on those two tests.  I expect the students to try both tests, as no lower grade will be given than what is currently in the gradebook.  As I explained to the students, sometimes it takes students a little longer to master skills and concepts.  Maybe they could not demonstrate mastery on the test, but after more practice of reading (as we have been doing), they may be able to show growth now, and I would like to recognize that. No student will be consequenced for not doing it, but I strongly encourage all kids to try it!

Logins for the website (where students will retake the tests) can be found at our individual google classroom sites.  It is a spreadsheet under the assignment called “Benchmark Tests.”

4.  I will also be posting extra credit opportunities on our Google Classroom site in the form of reading articles and completing comprehension questions and specific assignments on  Check there at the end of the week for a post about EXTRA CREDIT.

5.  The Carlos Museum Field Trip is full.  I will only accept 3 more alternates in case students don’t go or change their minds.  I have plenty of chaperones too.  Thanks!

In conclusion…. (y’all are saying “Finally!!!!”–I can hear you from here!) other than the Benchmark Test retakes (which are already available) and the Wringer assignments (which kids should be working on this week), there will be no ASSIGNED WORK over the break.  Students who work hard this week, should not have much to complete over the break.

It is my hope that all students will be able to enjoy time with their friends and family over the break.  Happy Thanksgiving to all the 6th grade families.

Order Hatchet, the December Book of the Month by 11/20

I will be placing another Scholastic order on November 20 for the next book of the month.  We will be reading “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen.  On Scholastic, the novel is only $4.00.  Place your online order soon so we can all have our books by our return to school after Thanksgiving break!  You can also order “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry for January ($7.00) and “Holes” for February  ($4.00) while you are there!

6th Grade Field Trip to Carlos Museum

The 6th grade team is excited to present an opportunity to check out some really great exhibitions that connect to all of the subjects that we teach at the Carlos Museum at Emory University.

The Carlos Museum is gifting us a transportation grant to make this trip more affordable, so it is our hope that each of our students will attend this trip.

The cost is $7 and the money and signed permission slip is due on Tuesday, November 14.

Check out some of the cool things you can see while we are there:
